This is it. Only a little over a week left in the regular season and my boys in orange and black are making one hell of a playoff run. And, I’m here to say that it’s about damn time we all got excited about hockey in April again.
It’s going to be one of those edge of your seat, nail biting finishes where every single game not only matters but is absofreakinlutely necessary. Of the six remaining games, only two of the teams have been eliminated from playoff contention: the Senators today and the Maple Leafs on Thursday. As for the rest, we’ve got the Pens twice, the Red Wings on Wednesday (must watch television) and the Islanders to wrap up the season.
Now, for all of you hockey newbies out there, the top three teams of each division are guaranteed a playoff spot. The rest battle it out for the wild card, where the top two remaining teams from each conference are given a playoff berth. The Flyers currently hold the second wild card spot in the East behind the Islanders with the Red Wings hot on their tails.
As for the playoff picture, in the first round, the division winner with the best record, in our case, the Caps, will be matched against the wild card team with the lesser record, which is currently the Flyers. And, if that 2-1 OT win thriller we had the other night versus the Caps was any indication of what’s to come, we should be in for one hell of a match-up.
So, get ready for a wild week of hockey and don’t look now, but this town is quickly making a name for itself again.
