TOP 10 SUPER BOWL COMMERCIALS OF ALL TIME

I was pretty disappointed with last night’s Super Bowl. I expected something much bigger for the 50th Anniversary. The game itself was pretty boring, the commercials were just okay and the half-time show really didn’t do it for me. I mean, we’re talking about a multibillion dollar industry and the best they can do is Coldplay with a side of Bruno Mars and Beyoncé? In case you didn’t already know, Bey completely stole the show. And, even then, she didn’t wow me like she did in 2013.

All in all, not as great of an entertainment night as I would have liked. But, since I graduated with a degree in advertising, and the Super Bowl is the biggest advertising show on earth, I couldn’t not blog about it. Originally, I had planned to write about the top 10 commercials, but nothing really jumped out at me and, to be honest, I left in the third quarter (judge me). So, instead, I created a list of my top 10 Super Bowl commercials of all time.

10. THE THROWBACK: APPLE – 1984 (1984)

Pretty crazy (and ironic) to look back at the commercial where Apple’s Mac was first introduced.

9. THE WARM FUZZY: NIKE – “HARE JORDAN” (1992)

How can you not love the commercial that inspired one of the best movies of all time, Space Jam.

8. THE CLEVER: E-TRADE – “BABY” (2008)

Investment companies usually have extremely boring commercials; so, it was awesome to see one take a risk and have it pay off. The original talking baby commercial never gets old.

7. THE TEAR JERKER: BUDWEISER - "PUPPY LOVE" (2014)

Beer, puppies, horses…does it get any better?

6. THE REASON WE ALL PLAYED H.O.R.S.E: MCDONALDS - "NOTHING BUT NET" (1993)

For Super Bowl XXVII, the NBA, not the NFL, had everyone talking…interesting.

5. THE RELATABLE: BRIDGETON - "REPLY ALL" (2011)

I think we can all relate to this one. How is it 2016 and I still can’t unsend an email or, more importantly, a text?

4. THE TWIST: TITE - "MIRACLE MONTANA STAIN" (2013)

How about Tide knocking it out of the park. Now, that’s some outside the box thinking.

3. THE CELEBRITY APPEARANCE: SNICKERS - "BETTY WHITE" (2010)

It’s impossible not to love Betty White. In her 90s and still completely killin’ the game. Nice work, Snickers.

2. THE BANNED: NEWCASTLE BROWN ALE - "ANNA KENDRICK" (2014)

The banned Super Bowl ads are usually the funniest and, in this day in age, can easily be made popular on a much lesser dime. It was hard to pick just one, but I love Anna Kendrick and I thought this ad was hilarious.

1. THE FUNNY: REEBOK - "TERRY TATE OFFICE LINEBACKER" (2003)

Hands down my favorite commercial of all time. To this day, my family and I still quote Terry on a fairly regular basis. Well done Reebok, well done.

HONORABLE MENTION – DORITOS: "MAN'S BEST FRIEND" (2012)

Dorito commercials are always on point. And, it’s great to see a JMU alum achieve something great. Go Dukes!
